It’s that exciting time of year again when new product announcements start rolling in and Canon’s announcement of the high-end PowerShot G1 X compact camera this afternoon is very exciting indeed! Created for professionals and keen enthusiasts alike, the G1 X is a serious bit of kit packed into a relatively small body.

But what options do flip out screens offer? Are they just a gimmick, or do they really give more creative freedom? I decided to go to extreme lows and highs with my Canon G11 to see what difference this variable-angle screen could make.

The G series has always made a great case for keeping your serious shooting compact and since Canon have decided to stay clear of competing in the micro system market, this is their middle sized enthusiast offering.

Canon’s release of the S95 has excited comment from many bloggers and review sites as to whether it is a worthy update on its predecessor, the S90, which was very well received but had a couple of niggling problems. With these in mind I took the S95 on holiday with me to Ibiza for a thorough trial run.

Once again Canon have attempted to create a camera with sufficient capability to ensure value for money, with longevity a high priority. Broadly speaking, this is not a camera that anyone will be bored of quickly, with a superb array of capture modes and controls which will grant enormous creative license to experienced photographers whilst being easy-to-use for beginners.

Those of you who read my previous review of the Canon SX200 will probably be wondering where I could take another camera that would be more bizarre than a hitchhike to Morocco. I came up with Blackpool… In my defence, it was Blackpool in January, for a Ballroom Dancing competition.

If you’re already excited about the new Canon PowerShot G11 and S90 then take a look at this: Full resolution PowerShot G11 and S90 sample images have just been released. The samples are all taken at ISO 80, so we can’t tell how good Canon’s new Dual Anti-Noise System will be, but both sets of sample images are very impressive for compact digital cameras…

The Canon PowerShot S90 has an impressive résumé: a 10 megapixel sensor, 28-105mm f2.0-4.9 image stabilised lens, and 3 inch LCD screen – all crammed into a slim pocket-sized format. We reckon this makes the new S90 a ‘baby’ PowerShot G11. The excitement doesn’t stop there – the PowerShot S90 has very innovative trick up its sleeve!
