Along with the launch of their 2 new digital SLR cameras, the EOS 600D and 1100D (see other post) Canon also announced the arrival of 2 new Speedlite flashguns, the 320EX and the 270EX II. Because the 320EX is a brand new model, it’s difficult to know exactly what we should expect, but it certainly seems well equipped. The Canon Speedlite 270EX II is, as the name suggests, an upgraded version of and replacement for the Canon Speedlite 270EX, offering the same tilt/bounce functionality plus some new features.

Christmas will be here soon and whether you love it or loathe it, it does offer all of us the chance to shoot some great family portraiture. This gives you a rare opportunity, to snap some family groups and to use your studio lighting. I’m not suggesting that we all turn our lounges into studios, but if we do some simple planning, before it gets too hectic, we can get ourselves ready for action in plenty of time.

If you’ve bought (or been bought) or are buying a digital SLR camera you may have already discovered that the camera itself is just one of the many things you need to make the most of it. While some are just nice to have, others are absolute essentials. In this guide we will look at both kinds; those accessories that you should not consider buying a camera without and those which you may want to put on a “wish-list” for another day.

A while back I purchased a Canon G11. Partly because I’ve lacked a decent compact camera for a while, and partly because I’ve always been a bit fascinated with high-speed flash synchronization. For those who are scratching their heads at what that means, the flash sync speed of any camera is the fastest shutter speed you can use with flash before the shutter and flash fail to synchronize together, and you get a failed photo.

There’s a gulf between basic third party flashes and the manufacturers’ all singing, all dancing models. It’s this market space that a few pocket lighting specialists fill. The German brand Metz is one of the best known and produce a range which aims to match the big boys in every respect while still remaining slightly more ‘cost effective’.

Buying so called ‘non branded’ products can be a bit of a no-no for some people, and I know many photographers who won’t touch anything unless it’s got Nikon or Canon written on it. With a whole host of less expensive non brand products on offer, should we start taking them more seriously?

I suppose everyone should have some New Years’ resolutions and one of mine is to write more about ‘on camera flash’. Over the last few years I just haven’t had the need to use one, but because I’m getting more and more questions and emails about them it’s high time I got to grips with them again.
