Today Canon have announced the launch of their new enthusiasts SLR camera – the Canon EOS 60D, and I’m lucky enough to have been invited to Canon HQ in Reigate to get some hands-on time with the new EOS on the very morning of its launch. This is nothing short of an exclusive!

The world is a huge and amazing place with loads of incredible things to photograph. Unfortunately, the truth is that most of us will never get to see a lot of it, so sometimes it pays to set more reasonable photographic targets. With that in mind, your own backyard is as good a place as any to start, and you don’t need to have expensive specialist equipment. You might be surprised what you find there and the photographs you get.

And this raises an important first question: how big a part of the trip will photography be? The answer to the question will be determined by what kind of photographer are you and what kind of trip are you taking, which in turn will determine the gear you take, the methods you use and the photos you capture.

Once again Canon have attempted to create a camera with sufficient capability to ensure value for money, with longevity a high priority. Broadly speaking, this is not a camera that anyone will be bored of quickly, with a superb array of capture modes and controls which will grant enormous creative license to experienced photographers whilst being easy-to-use for beginners.

I’m the kind of person who loves ‘stuff’ it doesn’t matter what that stuff is just as long as it is something. So I was delighted when this arrived in my office a few weeks ago giving me the chance to have a play! With Easter weekend and a trip home to Scotland planned I would put this little baby through its paces!

I’ve used a lot of Canon bodies and currently use a Canon 1Ds Mark 3 – I’ve had a 300D, 20D, 40D, 5D, 5D Mark II, 1D Mark II, 1Ds Mark II, 1D Mark III, 1Ds Mark III, 350D, 400D, 450D, 500D and now a 550D – so I’m very familiar with what Canon’s XXXD series is like. It’s interesting that the price has started to go up again and that the XXXD series is no longer Canon’s entry level body. This is a good thing in my book as it means that the 550D is actually a pretty solid choice for those not wanting to spend the extra to get a XXD or the (relatively) new 7D.

Last year was the first ever Gadget Show Live and this year saw a dramatic increase in the size of the show, with more of the NEC’s halls in use, more exhibitors on display and an extra day to visit.

Those of you who read my previous review of the Canon SX200 will probably be wondering where I could take another camera that would be more bizarre than a hitchhike to Morocco. I came up with Blackpool… In my defence, it was Blackpool in January, for a Ballroom Dancing competition.

The new Canon EOS 550D has arrived just 11 months after the 500D was announced and it’s packing an impressive list of features that are sure to cause a stir in the sub-£1000 digital SLR market. Borrowing components from the EOS 7D and bolstering the video credentials makes the 550D an attractive option for enthusiasts looking to upgrade.
