I had a G 10 which I used as a back up to my 7 D and as my "always have a camera with me because you never know" stand-by. The daylight performance of the G 10 is wonderful, as all the reviews said - but ....oh dear!!! ... the low light performance just did not cut it. Noise, noise and more noise - just not acceptable for my requirements. I therefore bought a G 11 in July and have used it quite a lot since then. Daylight/sunlight performance is just about indistinguishable from that of the G 10 but its performance at high ISO settings is far beyond what I had been expecting. Of course, I have to fiddle around with the settings, but I find that the results are often quite amazing as long as I shoot in RAW (and can therefore "tweak" the white balance in Aperture during post-treatment). I can capture low light images which, without my DSLR, I should otherwise have missed. The swivel screen is another plus. I believe that the new G 12's main difference is in the quality of HD video capture, but I am very happy with the G 11 and shall stick with it until Canon give it a bigger sensor (G 14?).

The G11 images at ISO 800 look like ISO 200 images from the usual run of small sensor cameras. This is extraordinary. Furthermore the tonal scale (shadow/highlight detail) appears similar to the JPG's from my 450D, also amazing. I have not explored RAW yet.

yes, come one canon, can this camera take equally nice pix at iso 400 +.
i reckon if it could you'd be shoving it on our faces.
perhaps ur just milking the buzz of a new product to get loads of pre-orders
and then going to disappoint us all with another average high iso performer.
i'd love you to prove me wrong.
i ain't spending £400 on a compact that can't match a 400D at least up to iso 400
and i bet i'm not alone in that opinion.

Beautiful results BUT - and a BIG but - what is the performance like at high ISO? My G7 gives equally impressive results at 80 & 100 ISO, but by 400 ISO the noise is horrendous! Which makes it a great tool oudoors or with a quality studio lighting, but useless for real life / low light work.
Canon claim the noise problem has been virtually eliminated, but then they would wouldn't they?!
Mind you, I AM tempted...
