Nikon 16-35mm f4 VR Lens

A new FX wide-angle zoom has just been announced by Nikon and it looks like an absolute corker: The Nikon 16-35mm f4 features 2nd-generation Vibration Reduction, Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass and a Silent Wave Motor (SWM). If you aren’t drooling already, the features list doesn’t end there…

Optical performance

The Nikon 16-35mm f4 VR lens is clearly designed for exceptional optical performance: The two ED elements are joined by three aspherical elements (minimising distortion & aberration) and Nano Crystal coating to reduce reflections.

Low-light photography

If you’re mourning the lack of an f2.8 aperture then the Nikon 14-24mm & 17-35mm are two solid options – but don’t discount the 16-35mm f4 just yet. The Vibration Reduction is capable of up to four f-stops compensation against camera shake. If you need to freeze action there’s always the option of bumping the ISO up a little because the D700, D3 & D3S treat you to amazing high ISO image quality.

77mm filters

The 16-35mm f4 VR has one substantial advantage over its expensive big brother, the 14-24mm f2.8, because it can accept 77mm filters (the 14-24mm doesn’t have a filter thread). This allows you to attach landscape photography essentials like a circular polariser and graduated ND filters like the LEE filter system.

Investing in good glass

The RRP of the Nikon 16-35mm f4 VR lens is £1049.99 and although the street-price will become more competitive as time passes, one key consideration holds true; camera bodies may come and go, but exceptional glass provides many years of service whilst holding good resale value. The 16-35mm is built to last too – a magnesium alloy body, weather sealing and included lens hood all provide essential protection.
