I have a theory: All digital SLRs are created by internet gossip reaching critical mass and *boom* suddenly a new camera materialises in a marketing department. Crazy theories aside, it’s more likely that Canon have been covertly labouring over the new EOS 5D Mark II for a while… lets have a look.

Industry insiders have long been speculating on the imminent arrival of a replacement or follow-up to the Canon EOS 5D. A few days ago Canon added a teaser to their American website showing the outline of a camera with the words “Destined Evolution”, and banners declaring “The EOS story continues” have appeared on Canon’s European sites. If these campaigns were designed to drum up anticipation, then no-one can deny they have worked!

Sony has joined the elite group of manufacturer’s to launch a digital SLR before Photokina with the arrival of the Sony Alpha a900.

Nikon didn’t let Canon take the limelight for long, announcing their new digital SLR the Nikon D90, just a day later on 27th August 2008 – with very little fuss and subsequently, a large helping of panache.

The first of the major launches of Photokina 2008, Canon took the plunge on 26th August with the latest in the EOS line up, the 50D. Sitting slightly above the Canon EOS 40D in Canon’s range of digital SLR’s, the Canon EOS 50D came as a surprise to some, who having heard the rumours, were expecting a follow up to the Canon EOS 5D.
