Canon EF 70-200mm f2.8L IS USM Mk II
Canon has announced a New Years gift for all the L-series addicts out there: A shiny new 70-200mm f2.8L IS II USM EF lens, featuring a revised optical design, optimised AF performance and reduced minimum focus distance to 1.2m (the original was 1.4m).

The revised optical design of the EF 70-200mm f2.8 L IS USM II incorporates a new fluorite element and one additional ultra-low dispersion (UD) element, boosting the count to five. Further internal changes include a faster CPU, running an updated AF algorithm which makes the autofocus “faster and quieter” – a perfect match for the top-notch AF system found in the EOS 7D and 1D Mark IV digital SLRs.
Image stabilisation (IS) is now 1-stop more effective than the original 70-200mm f2.8L IS, capable of compensating for camera shake at shutter speeds up to 4-stops slower than normal. Good news!
Just to round-off an impressive list of upgrades, the new 70-200mm f2.8L IS II also incorporates an updated external design: The lens controls have been made shallower, to prevent accidental changes, and the MF ring has been beefed up to improve accuracy whilst manually focusing.

Revised controls for a truly 'classic' pro zoom lens
Now it’s time to make sure you’re seated and not using a laptop or an iPhone that you can drop in disbelief. The suggested retail price for this new professional workhorse is an eye-watering £2,799.99. There’s always bound to be a premium to pay for the final pixels of unbelievable quality, but even we have to say, that is quite a shock!

geruchten over nieuw 70-200 IS 2.8 - Pagina 2 - Belgiumdigital forum - Digitale fotografieI have the original 70-200 USM IS and it’s great. The autofocus hunts a bit in certain circumstances on my 40D but was fine on my 1V film SLR. The new one will undoubtably be an improvement but what a price. Are Canon trying to drive their clientele to Nikon?
Ken CservenkaI’m so glad I bought the original version for £1300 in Nov’09.
Ian SI need go buy a 70-200. I’m the research hunt to work out whether its worth doubling the money the MKII. I’ve got a 5D Mark II, so makes me question whether I should match a modern camera with a modern lens? warehouse, what’s the verdict?
Cheers
Liam GilmanHi Liam,
It depends on your budget, but recent reviews have shown the Mk II version to be vastly superior to the Mk I. There’s a very useful review on dpreview which might be worth a read if you haven’t read it already: http://www.dpreview.com/news/1005/10050602canon70200iireview.asp. Whilst the Mk I version is great and obviously a lot cheaper, there are an awful lot of benefits to splashing out for the newer version!
Hope this helps
RachelIt truely is as sharp as pin, I have tried both mki and mkii side by side and mkii is far sharper.
I have sold my first version and Im currently shooting with the new model. I shoot maily weddings and find this lens to great in low light, with fast auto focus. Chaeck out some sample images on my Peterborough Wedding Photography website at http://www.peterboroughphotography.com/blog/wordpress/galleries/my-photos/
Paul NicolsonPosted some more images taken recently at a wedding near Stamford and Bourne.
This lens is so sharp and I would say I use it more than I have ever used another Lens before.

I thought long and hard before buying this lens but it is quite simply amazing!
AndyMcLThis really is the benchmark for a 70-200 2.8 lens. I was just looking through Adobe Bridge at images taken with this lens and they just stand out in terms of colour. Move to 100% view and the sharpness is amazing.
