Andy Rouse DSLR 101 Seminar

Andy Rouse Visions of Light Slimbridge DuckLast Sunday Warehouse Express and Andy Rouse descended yet again on the venue that is fast becoming a firm favourite with us for our ever-popular seminars. This time the topic was DSLR 101, where Andy gave an in-depth run-down of everything you need to know about Digital SLR photography, starting with the very basics.

The day dawned bright and sunny and as the attendees arrived there was much excited chatter about what the day would hold. Starting with white balance and moving through aperture, RAW v JPEG, shutter speed, histograms, ISO and metering amongst many others, Andy gave a blow by blow account of how to be a great photographer, fielding questions from all corners along the way.

At just after 2pm Andy broke for a long two hour lunch break giving everyone a chance to put into practise all the great techniques learnt in the morning session. Whilst the sunshine hadn’t managed to last from the morning, the excitement still reigned supreme and 80 camera fans trooped out into the grounds to capture what they could from the wide range of beautiful wildlife that Slimbridge has to offer.

Upon return to the lecture theatre at 4pm, Andy ran through the competition entries, picking his favourites and ultimately the winner of the £100 Warehouse Express voucher prize.

In fourth place with this beautiful tiger shot was Richard Matthews.

Stephen Peacey made third place with his bird portrait.

This gentle black and white shot by Sue Bernhard-Smith won 2nd place.

First place went to Jo Baker for her atmospheric photograph of this drummer.

Well done Jo! Here she is collecting her prize from Andy!

The day was a huge success with some great feedback from the audience on the level the seminar was pitched at and Andy’s enthusiastic and down-to-earth approach to teaching the various facts and figures. As a result the next seminar has been announced – Visions of Light at Chester Zoo!

See you there!

  • The DSLR 101 Seminar at Slimbridge. On the whole an enjoyable day with Andy very entertaining and informative. Perhaps the course/seminar was not 100% for me but even so I did learn some things that I had not known before. It was very interesting getting tips on technique from someone who has proved himself more than capable. The proof of the pudding, so to speak, is in the pictures.
My only critisism of the whole day would be the competition aspect. of it. I know that Andy stated that he hated judging other peoples pictures, and I can understand that. As often people critisize without knowing the full story etc. But I, like many others I’m sure, would have liked to have seen the other contributions displayed. And maybe the people attending the seminar could have voted their favourites with Andy picking the winner from a short list.
Best wishes and regards Tony Long

  • Hi guys,

I had a brilliant day and enjoyed Andy’s course immensely. Andy is easy to talk to, down to earth and no question was too silly to ask. The content of the day was just the right level for me, but I’m glad I took notes because I couldn’t possibly remember everything! I have referred back to them since Sunday, however would still welcome some e-notes from the day if Andy is able to put them together. I now take my camera with me all the time so I can practice, practice, practice! Please thank Andy for a super day.

    Regards

  • An excellent event that helped me a lot.

In my view the morning session was most valuable.

The afternoon session on workflow was just too fast for a RAW neophyte like me and Andy said the event was not for experts.

  • I would definately recommend the 101 seminar to anyone. It was a very imformative, fun day with time to go and put into practice some of the theory. The photography used as examples was stunning and how great to get an insight into how they were achieved. Disappointed that the Visions of Light is in Chester… can we have one down south too please. I will be on the booking list.
A big thank you to Andy for a very enjoyable and memorable day.

  • What a fantastic course, the day was perfectly pitched at the beginner DSLR user. Andy gets the information across in an entertaining and enthusiastic way. I would highly recommend it.

  • Well I enjoyed every minute, just what I needed, as I had struggled for nearly 3yrs with my Canon D10, pictures crap, maybe one in 20 ok, then after a long story, nearly giving up photography, I decided to get a better camera, a D5, Fuji S3 Pro at the time, or a Nikon D3, that was just to exspensive, I had followed all the tests, in the mags, but haveing check out the express warehouse site notice Andys review section, anyway Andy had just reviewed the Nikon D700, that was eye opening, like the Slimbridge seminar, haveing sold all my film gear and lenses, bought one, it was the best decision I have ever made, enjoying photography again, and the camera has also taught me alot too. I needed some one to point me in the right direction, Andy did that, and more, its given me the confindence to go foreward, also shown me that I have not even scratch the surface of digital photography, still got a lot to learn.
I have already enrolled for the next seminar, the only thing I shall be worried about is wether I am up to it

  • My husband and I had a fantastic day. The seminar was pitched at the right level for us and we learned a lot. I love Andy’s style of delivery – he made it all sound so easy! It was great to be able to have time to try to put a little of what we’d learned into practice straight away and we were pleased with some of the results. We would have booked for the VOL seminar but will be away that weekend. If you consider doing one down south we would certainly try to come to that. Thanks for a great day.
